HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO

REPLACE MY ASPHALT DRIVEWAY IN MN?

For most homeowners,
it comes down to 2 things:

Dollars & Cents.

The sole purpose of this page is to answer the question,

“How much does it cost to replace my asphalt driveway?”

Duramax Asphalt is based in the Twin Cities, MN and we serve the surrounding metro & suburbs. Here we give ballpark pricing for our service area in Minnesota.

There are many factors in determining the final price of replacing an asphalt driveway. Some more complex than others.

But we want to give the everyday customer a good idea of how to estimate ballpark pricing for your asphalt driveway replacement. We accomplish this with our custom blacktop pricing chart:

The Duramax Asphalt Driveway Price Chart

1. Measure out your driveway width & length

2. Multiply width and length to calculate your driveway’s area

  • Let’s say your dimensions are 25’ by 45’

  • That would be 1,125 SQFT

3. That would bring you to the $7 per SQFT price point

4. That totals to $7,875 as a general idea of what replacing the same footprint of your asphalt driveway might cost

Your next step is to move from a ballpark price to an exact price by getting a free estimate.

What are the factors affecting the cost of a new asphalt driveway?

There are many factors that will adjust the cost of replacing an asphalt driveway in the Twin Cities. Here are some factors for your consideration:

1. Driveway surface square feet
Square footage of your asphalt driveway is the predominant factor influencing the cost of replacement. And since we already covered that above with the Duramax Pricing Chart we’ll move on to the next factor.

2. Sub-base condition & repair
Under your asphalt driveway is a layer called sub-base. This layer gives the shape, slope and structural support of your driveway. Under the sub-base is your soil mix.

Most sub-bases are made of a mixture of class 5 rock aggregate, some organic soil, sand, sugar sand, and clay. Minneapolis’ west metro is notorious for having clay in the sub-base and it’s not fun to work with.

Clay is not a good sub-base for a new asphalt driveway because of how it retains water, as well as how much it expands and contracts based on saturation. Because sub-base is so crucial, bad sub-base must be removed until we hit a solid surface. Some driveway sub-bases only require removal of 1 to 3 inches. Others may need 8 inches or more removed.

All sub-bases need to be reshaped & compacted in preparation of a new driveway. Within the scope of Duramax Asphalt’s free estimates is up to 4 inches of sub-base repair . But if a sub-base requires more than 4 inches of sub-base to be removed this will add to the cost.

3. Expanding your driveway’s footprint
Many homeowners want to know the option of expanding the width of their asphalt driveway. No problem! We can include that addition in our free estimate. Keep in mind that your city may have setback restrictions on the width of your driveway next to your neighbor’s lot line. Cities may also have restrictions on the width of where your driveway meets a public road. Consult your city for more information.

4. Location
The logistics of Duramax Asphalt depend on the location & proximity of asphalt plants from your property. These asphalt plants not only produce the asphalt mix we use to pave you a new driveway but they also receive the old asphalt and sub-base we removed. And yes, plants recycle old asphalt and concrete. We use this recycled material all the time as sub-base and even in new asphalt mix.
The distance from your property to an asphalt plant may impact the price of your driveway because of the drive time & added fuel required for heavy trucks (often carrying 16 to more than 20 tons of material).
